Cutera Laser or Industrial Engraver? A 6-Step Buying Checklist for Admin Buyers

Before you type another model name into a search box, save this checklist. I'm not a laser engineer. I'm the office administrator for a 40-person company — roughly $350K in annual purchasing across 25 vendors — and I report to both operations and finance. In 2024, that meant buying two very different laser systems: a Cutera system for our clinical services side and an industrial laser for leather engraving and pattern cutting on the production side. If I had bought one "versatile" machine without that breakdown, someone would have been unhappy.

Step 2: Match the laser category to the material and medical task

The fastest way to upset your finance team is to buy a machine that sounds impressive but doesn't match the material. For industrial laser work, the rough starting points are:

  1. Leather engraving and cutting fabric patterns: usually a CO2 laser, because that wavelength is absorbed well by organic materials.
  2. Jewelry and metal marking: often a fiber laser or a dedicated jewelry laser engraving machine, because the fiber wavelength works on metal surfaces.
  3. Thick metal cutting: a different machine altogether — typically a high-power fiber or CO2 laser, not a desktop engraver.

For the medical side, the matching is biological, not mechanical. Keywords like "xeo cutera laser" will pull up platform details, but the real question is whether that platform and handpiece fit the intended procedure. A Cutera Xeo system may have more than one handpiece; an Excel V laser can be right for one clinical application and wrong for another. Ask the vendor to show you exactly what the device is intended to do.

Put another way: don't choose a laser because the brand name appeared five times in your search. Choose the system because the wavelength, power, delivery method, and compliance documents match your job.

Step 3: Ask for the paperwork before you ask for a discount

In the U.S., if you're buying a medical laser, ask the seller to provide the FDA clearance or approval documentation. Search the FDA's 510(k) database with the manufacturer and model name, then compare the intended use statement with your proposed clinical use. If a rep says "FDA approved" but won't share the letter, that's a red flag.

For an industrial laser engraver or cutter, ask for the CDRH laser class rating, safety features, and electrical safety certifications such as UL or CE, plus any local code requirements for ventilation and emissions.

This compliance step is not just legal theater. Per FTC guidelines at ftc.gov, marketing claims must be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated. If someone tells you their laser will "do everything," ask them to put that in a document with the specifications. They rarely will.

Step 4: Test with your material and your own pattern files

This is the step most people skip, and it's the one that prevents expensive mistakes. If you need to engrave leather, send the vendor samples of the exact leather you'll use. Send your actual vector file and your expected laser cutting patterns, not just a generic logo. Ask them to engrave and cut the same thickness and finish you plan to run in production.

One supplier I called about a jewelry marker said, "If you're engraving this part, a fiber laser is the right class; our CO2 unit is not the tool for that job." That honesty earned my trust for the machine he did sell me. A vendor who knows his boundaries is safer than one who promises everything.

Step 6: Calculate the total cost, the boring stuff included

Unit price is not the real price. It took me years — and a very awkward conversation with my VP of operations — to fully understand that. We once accepted a quote that left out ventilation and compressed air. The machine couldn't run safely until we spent another $1,800 and waited a week for installation.

Before you sign, put these into a spreadsheet:

  • Purchase price and freight

  • First-year service contract or time-and-materials rate

Red flags I've learned to take seriously

These are not theories. I have seen every one of these in vendor quotes and sales calls:

  • "This machine can do everything" — usually means it does several things acceptably and one thing poorly.
  • "We don't need to do samples" — run away.
  • No regulatory documentation, or a document that doesn't list the actual model.
  • No consumable price list. If you don't know the cost of a replacement tube or lens, you can't budget.
  • Service contract terms written like a mystery novel. Honestly, I'm not sure why laser service agreements vary so much from one vendor to the next. My best guess is that labor hours are defined differently. Get a plain-language answer to: "What is included, and what costs extra?"

So, bottom line: if you're evaluating a Cutera medical laser, a leather engraving machine, or a jewelry laser engraving machine, work through these six steps. Describe the task first, match the system to the material or clinical application, verify the paperwork, test on your own product, confirm support, and calculate the real five-year cost. Trust me on this one. The vendor who refuses to overpromise is usually the one worth buying from.
