There's no single "best" laser. I've managed procurement for a 45-person company that runs a two-location medspa and a metal fabrication shop, so I face this question from two very different worlds. Scenario A: Medical Aesthetics — Buy the Line Items, Not the Brochure
If you run a dermatology clinic or medspa, the Cutera name comes up early. The Cutera Xeo laser machine is a multi-application platform — different handpieces are used for different procedures like vascular and pigmented lesion work, hair reduction, and skin rejuvenation. The Cutera CO2 laser is a separate system, built specifically for resurfacing procedures. They share a brand name and a sales rep. They don't share a purpose, and they shouldn't share a budget line without careful thought.
Here's where cost control gets real: a total quote is a summary of five or six separate decisions. Platform. Handpieces. Installation. Training. First-year service contract. Disposables. If a vendor gives you one bundled number, they're hiding the structure. I don't approve laser purchases without a line-item breakdown.
The Handpiece Budget Trap
One medspa quote I audited looked great on the surface: $74,000 for a Xeo platform, one handpiece, training, and a year of service. A second vendor quoted $61,000 for the same base platform. I almost recommended Vendor B until I built the full TCO spreadsheet. Handpiece: $11,800. Training: $2,500. Installation: $1,400. First-year service: $4,200. Total: $80,900. The "cheaper" quote was actually about $7,000 more than Vendor A. The $13,000 discount turned out to be a premium hiding in fine print.
So glad I asked for the itemized quote. That spreadsheet saved us from a decision I'd have had to defend to our CFO all year.
For a smaller clinic, the approach changes but the principle doesn't. A single-location medspa doesn't need a fully loaded multi-handpiece system on day one. A certified refurbished Cutera Xeo or CO2 with one handpiece and a good service contract can be the right bridge. But this is also where I push back on vendors. Some won't return calls for a $40,000 order when they're used to $400,000 deals. That's their loss, not yours.

One compliance note before you market that system. FTC advertising guidance (ftc.gov) requires claims to be truthful and substantiated. If the device isn't cleared for a specific indication in your region, don't claim it on your website. A medspa owner I know learned this the hard way — not from a lawsuit, but from a warning letter that made paid ads impossible for months.
Scenario B: Industrial Fabrication — What Can a Fiber Laser Engrave?
This is the question from machine shops, and it deserves a direct answer.
A fiber laser engraves stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, brass, copper, titanium, and some coated metals. It can also mark certain plastics, ceramics, and stone with the right settings. What it won't do well is bare wood, clear glass, or paper. Those are CO2 laser jobs. If you buy a fiber laser expecting to engrave wooden signs, you've bought the wrong tool for the job — the machine itself isn't bad.
For plastics, test before you trust. Some ABS and polycarbonate mark cleanly; others smoke, melt, and turn into a mess. Same laser, same power setting range, completely different behavior. A responsible vendor will let you run samples from your own material before you pay. If they won't, that's a red flag.
Color Laser Engraving: No Ink Involved
Color laser engraving confuses a lot of first-time buyers. On metal, no ink or dye is used. A MOPA fiber laser creates color by heating a thin surface layer of stainless steel and forming an oxide film. The film's thickness determines the color. It's repeatable, but it isn't easy — alloy composition, surface finish, and even room temperature can shift the result. If a vendor promises exact Pantone matching on anodized aluminum, ask for samples on your material before you sign anything.
Run the Part Math Before You Buy
Here's a real example from our shop. We mark about 5,000 aluminum tags per year. Outsourced, that cost $0.48 per tag — roughly $2,400 annually. We bought a 30W MOPA fiber system with a rotary axis for $11,800. Electricity, lens care, and test scrap add around $120 a year. On outsourcing savings alone, payback lands near five years. After we added custom logo engraving for clients, the payback dropped below three.
Everything I'd read before that purchase said we needed 50W or more for serious metal marking. In practice, the 30W unit handles about 80% of our jobs, because our parts are mostly under six inches. Does the 50W engrave deeper? Yes. Do we need deep engraving daily? No. Buying the capability you actually use is cost control. Buying headroom you don't need is just expense.
Scenario C: Small Studio — The Machine Pays for Itself. Eventually.
This is the fastest-growing category I see. Someone wants to start a side business etching stainless steel tumblers, dog tags, phone cases, slate coasters. The good news: a desktop laser etcher is genuinely within reach. The bad news: too many people buy based on a YouTube video instead of unit economics.
So let's run the numbers. You can get 500 printed business cards — standard 14pt cardstock, double-sided — for $20–35 from online print shops (public pricing, January 2025). That's a consumable. You pay, you get cards, they run out. A $4,000 desktop fiber laser etcher is different. Material for one custom-etched stainless steel tumbler runs about $6–9. Electricity and lens wear add maybe $0.20. Sell that tumbler for $30, and you need roughly 180 sales to recover the machine cost — before you count your time or marketing spend. The laser creates capacity. It doesn't create demand. Don't skip that part.
What should you buy first? Figure out your actual first product, then choose the laser that makes that product. A 20–30W fiber unit handles stainless and aluminum. A desktop CO2 handles wood, acrylic, and leather. Many studios end up wanting both — that's fine, but start with one. The machine with the coolest demo footage isn't necessarily the machine that pays your rent.
And stick with a vendor who respects the size of your first order. When I started out, my first equipment purchase was a $2,000 engraving unit and a long list of beginner questions. The vendors who answered those questions are the ones who later quoted on our $40,000 and $110,000 purchases. The ones who ignored me because I was small? I don't remember their names. Today's tiny order is tomorrow's six-figure relationship. Any supplier who doesn't get that is a vending machine with better lighting.
Scenario D: Repair, Upgrade, or Replace?
The most expensive mistake in this industry isn't buying the wrong laser. It's abandoning a paid-off system because a single repair quote looks scary. Here's the rule I use: if the repair is under 30% of replacement cost and the system is under eight years old, repair it. If it's over 50% and the technology has jumped more than a generation, replace it. In between, decide based on downtime. A week of lost production can justify an upgrade on its own.
Also, question how parts get shipped. I once paid $45 in "expedited handling" for a sensor that arrived in a padded envelope via USPS First-Class — the current First-Class rate is $0.73 (usps.com, January 2025). The vendor made a tidy profit on our impatience. Keeping a small stock of common spares is cheaper than paying for speed after something fails.
Which Scenario Are You In?
Answer these four questions honestly:
- Are you buying for patient treatments? Scenario A.
- Do you have a production line with part specs to meet? Scenario B.
- Are you making custom products to sell, with volume still unproven? Scenario C.
- Do you already own a laser that's failing or outdated? Scenario D.
You can be in more than one — we're in A and B at the same time. That's fine; just keep the budgets separate. A Cutera CO2 laser and a fiber laser etcher both contain the word "laser." That's about the only thing they share.
The Bottom Line
After six years of tracking every laser-related invoice in our cost system, I've come to believe the vendor relationship shapes your long-term cost more than the spec sheet does. Get three quotes. Model five years of total cost. Ask about spare parts. And if a vendor treats your first order like a nuisance because it's small, walk away.
That's the whole playbook. It's not glamorous. It works.
